Vaquita Marina
(Phocoena sinus)
The scientific name of the vaquita is Phocoena sinus. The word Phocoena
is from the Latin word porpoise or pig fish and sinus means cavity,
referring to the Gulf of California. Thus Phocoena sinus means "The
porpoise of the Gulf of California". It is sometimes referred to
by the Spanish common name cochito, but since cochito is also used
for several other species of cetaceans in the area, scientists decided
to adopt the local fishermen's name which refers only to this animal:
Vaquita.
