Concrete actions to save the Marine
Vaquita (Phocoena sinus) from extinction have been taken
by Semarnat, as set forth in official letter SFNA/DGSPRNR/121/01,
undersigned by attorney Victor del Angel, General Director
of said agency. In the letter addressed to attorney Juan
Bezaury, General Coordinator of WWF Mexico, Del Angel explains
that pursuant to instructions provided by Victor Lichtinger,
Secretary of Semarnat, the conservation of Vaquita, exclusive
species of the Upper Gulf of California, has become a prioritary
action.

Activities for such purpose include
meetings to analyze the Vaquita's problem; promoting its
Management Plan; analyzing the Secretarial Resolution for
the Vaquita Refuge; implementing mechanisms together with
Conapesca to eliminate gill nets; conducting joint operations
with Profepa and the Navy to observe the compliance of the
Regulations for Natural Protected Areas; and assigning funds
for the establishment of a Sustainable Development Program
for the Upper Gulf of California.
