Mexican waters become a giant whale sanctuary


Hermosillo, Mexico.-
Mexican seas and its exclusive economic zone (200 miles from the coastline), became a giant sanctuary and refuge for whales since past 24th of May, acording to announcement published in the Mexican Official Gazzete, thanks to the efforts of WWF Mexico by lobbying, and Greenpeace with the proposal.
The mexican whales will have guaranteed its reproduction circle, borning, growing, learning, feeding and migrating, important phases for this cetaceans, also their habitat won´t be exposed to human explotation.


In the Mexican Official Gazzete, Victor Lichtinger, Enviromental and Natural Resources Ministry informs that due to the nature of this agreement his office will be in charge of administrating the refuge areas as well as the regional protection programs.

“Those programs”, declared Lichtinger, “must contain the physical, biological, social and cultural characteristics of the refuge area; objectives of the area; management and conservation measures; and delimitation of the priority zones towards the conservation of the species”.

Some considerations for decreed where: flora and fauna are part of the nation’s public wealth; Mexico counts with al least 31 species of cetaceous out of the 81 known in the world.

Also Mexico has actively contributed to the international efforts made by many other countries protecting whales; and at least, some species are in danger because hunting.

This agreement is the answer of the Mexican Government to the proposal “Investigation Program of Marine Mammals”, conformed in 1989 by the Instituto Nacional de la Pesca (National Fishery Institute), Sociedad Mexicana de Mamíferos Marinos (Mexican Society of Marine Mammals), Universidad de Baja California Sur (University of Baja California South), Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas de Baja California Sur (Center for Biological Research of Baja California South), ITESM Guaymas, Centro de Investigaciones de Quintana Roo, (Research Center of Quintana Roo), and Facultad de Ciencias de la UNAM, (Sciences School of UNAM).
